Dear Marianela, In just months, a ban on selling new animal-tested cosmetics in the European Union is due to be implemented. If kept intact, this ban will help end cosmetics testing on animals worldwide! But now the ban is dangerously under threat from a proposed loophole. Putting profits before progress, cosmetics companies are pressuring the European Commission to introduce a loophole to allow newly animal-tested cosmetics to continue being sold in the EU. Unbelievably, the Commission has already prepared draft rules that would allow it. The ban was first agreed to by lawmakers nearly twenty years ago, but has time and again been delayed; sign our petition telling European Commission President José Manuel Barroso not to take this giant step backward for animal welfare! This ban on animal-tested cosmetics has been in the works for more than 20 years, so cosmetics companies have had ample time to prepare. They need to stop their delaying tactics. Time is critically short, but you can help make a difference if you act now. Thanks in part to advocates like you, President Barroso hasn't yet agreed to support the proposed loophole. That's why it's urgent he hears from caring consumers around the globe that we don't need or want new cosmetics unless non-animal methods of testing can be used. If we succeed, the ban will make the EU the first cruelty-free cosmetics market in the world. There's no time to lose. Please sign our action to President Barroso today; tell him to stand up to the cosmetics industry and stop the suffering of millions of animals for new shampoos and anti-wrinkle creams. Thank you for helping the animals, today and always. Sincerely, Andrew Rowan President/Chief Executive Officer Humane Society International |
